Inspired – The Clip

Chris Bangle

Above is my clip that I’m going to use for the Inspired brief , where we take a speech or talk by a designer talking about their practise and create a piece of motion graphics to it. I’ve already played around with my clip with the use of background music to add effect. I’m interested in car design and transport design as a whole, and Chris stuck out to me as one of the game-changers.

Chris Bangle is most notable for his prior position as BMW’s Head Designer, directing the range’s visual language since 1992. Receiving criticism and praise alike on most cars that have incorporated his design ethics, he’s pushed car design forwards into an era where human emotion plays a huge role in the design of these machines.

The clip I chose was from a TED talk about ‘Great cars as art’, where he discusses the emotion behind designing the cars and the process of refining the ideas down to a single concept. It’s an interesting clip not only for many visual cues to animate, but also the way he talks so passionately about his team and their relationships, it shows a major part of design is working with others and leading a group.

REGULATION | IRREGULATION

I’ve been working on a couple of poster ideas for a collaborative exhibition being held in Camberwell. Take a look, not finalised though…

Lick’n Chick’n – The Musical

Bad Type Hits Broadway!

The brief was to celebrate bad typography to form a campaign that could go on with support from the university. Our goal was to have fun with this brief, and to think big. We immediately decided that typography just loses all meaning when drunk; no matter who you are, a salad or sushi bar will be neglected in search of the infamous fast food.

On arrival, you are inundated with bad typography and imagery. You need but point at the menu above the attendants head, blaring out the meal number in great anticipation of the food that you are about to devour.

So to show this, we bring to you, “Lick’n Chick’n – The Musical”.

Had great fun making this, the group (Emma Noble, Bhav Mistry, Olivia Tytherleigh, Sophia Ray and I) got along really well, complimenting each other in our different skills and putting a lot of hard work into this project with no problems or altercations.

Enjoy.

Ants Ants Ants

To learn illustrator, we were each given a word and have to produce an A2 poster that featured the word. I got ‘Network’ and decided to look into networks within nature; I love the idea of ant farms and colonies making up the word itself, with ants creeping about the page. Above is the basis on which I’ll construct the poster.

Nina Chakrabarti

Spent the day working with Nina, a London based illustrator who’s published “My Wonderful World of Fashion”. She’s now publishing the book in German, and needed some help laying out her hand-drawn type in photoshop around the original imagery. Was a great opportunity to work within a professional practice.

Check her out here.

Collaborations

Went to a pretty inspiring exhibition today at the ‘A Foundation’ Gallery, in a disused school in Shoreditch. It’s called, “If You Could Collaborate”, in which designers teamed up with others in different professions to create some amazing pieces! I especially loved the laser cut type at the top, as well as the use of lighting in the Avec font.

Love Letters from Philadelphia…

Saw these in this month’s creative review, done by Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program and Stephen Powers.

I like the use of murals to lift spirits of a community, a lot of them are on derelict buildings around the neighbourhood.
