The House Hunt

Ages since I updated, and probably nothing more until GDC2, but a recent house hunt, and a lay-about lamp, have led to some scratchy fun.

A total of 12 houses rejected, and here’s why…

Motion Graphics Project

Well, after failed attempts at attempting to visualise Chris Bangle’s clip, I’ve decided to totally backtrack and start again. I attempted a chalkboard stopframe animation after ripping my hair out on Adobe After Effects, which not only looked awful, didn’t really evoke Bangle’s style. Not the ideal situation, but oh well, that’s design process.

One thing I found whilst watching other people’s motion graphics in the crit was that the one’s that succeeded, were the ones that moved a steady pace, if attempting all words, you’ll end up with something unreadable and leave you feeling dizzy.

Another thing I found is that After Effects is not the only way to realise my ideas, but it can be used to aid my overall idea. So on that note, my new idea…

I decided that I’d like to do something analogue with my piece, and started looking at Stefan Sagmeister’s typography work. As a designer, he’s pretty inspiring in his own right, he understands that life and design should go hand in hand. His approach to trying to lead a happy life is something I admire, he’s honest about everything he does and his stories are infinitely interesting.

After watching his design talks on TED, I scoured youtube in my search for a clip that I could use. This video, particularly 2.03 onwards should work really well:

“I always try to go in a direction where the final piece will incorporate the process visibly”.

His work is usually realised on a big scale with witty concepts, and sometimes his style is hard to pin down as a visual, but more within the guts he has to work this way. So after thinking of different ways of to do this, I started looking at Dominos, the way they fall and interact in motion.

For example:

Obviously on a much larger scale, but you get the idea. Story board to follow, as well as a POA, space hire etc.

Escapade Sting

Here’s the short sting for our music channel.

Escape to Escapade

We received a brief from Peter Chadwick from Popular to think of our own music channel and create the brand identity surrounding it. Working with Ali Coggan, we decided that we’d like to have a channel that’d allow people to escape their daily lives and go back to better times; basically a channel of forgotten classics and one hit wonders.

Called Escapade, with the slogan ‘Escape to Escapade’, we’ve started with our poster that’s based around the concept of being taken away to a different land, so we hand-made the poster to fit our wacky theme. The hot air balloons carry all the items you’d ever need to escape with to Escapade… and more.

Letterpress

Took this photo with Ali today for our portfolios, thought I’d put it up :)

REGULATION / IRREGULATION

Well the posters are going up as we speak around all the UAL colleges and others places. Sweet!

Inspired Story Board

Heres the story board to accompany the clip.

I’ve taken inspiration from Saul Bass’ simple silhouette motion graphics, as well as the new American Express adverts, titled ‘Impossible.

Inspired – The Clip

Chris Bangle

Above is my clip that I’m going to use for the Inspired brief , where we take a speech or talk by a designer talking about their practise and create a piece of motion graphics to it. I’ve already played around with my clip with the use of background music to add effect. I’m interested in car design and transport design as a whole, and Chris stuck out to me as one of the game-changers.

Chris Bangle is most notable for his prior position as BMW’s Head Designer, directing the range’s visual language since 1992. Receiving criticism and praise alike on most cars that have incorporated his design ethics, he’s pushed car design forwards into an era where human emotion plays a huge role in the design of these machines.

The clip I chose was from a TED talk about ‘Great cars as art’, where he discusses the emotion behind designing the cars and the process of refining the ideas down to a single concept. It’s an interesting clip not only for many visual cues to animate, but also the way he talks so passionately about his team and their relationships, it shows a major part of design is working with others and leading a group.

I’ve been working on a couple of poster ideas for a collaborative exhibition being held in Camberwell. Take a look, not finalised though…

Lick’n Chick’n – The Musical

Bad Type Hits Broadway!

The brief was to celebrate bad typography to form a campaign that could go on with support from the university. Our goal was to have fun with this brief, and to think big. We immediately decided that typography just loses all meaning when drunk; no matter who you are, a salad or sushi bar will be neglected in search of the infamous fast food.

On arrival, you are inundated with bad typography and imagery. You need but point at the menu above the attendants head, blaring out the meal number in great anticipation of the food that you are about to devour.

So to show this, we bring to you, “Lick’n Chick’n – The Musical”.

Had great fun making this, the group (Emma Noble, Bhav Mistry, Olivia Tytherleigh, Sophia Ray and I) got along really well, complimenting each other in our different skills and putting a lot of hard work into this project with no problems or altercations.

Enjoy.
